Route optimisation, vehicle routing and operations research terms used across the Optrak documentation.
- ADR The European agreement governing the carriage of dangerous goods by road, setting driver certification, vehicle, labelling, and documentation requirements.
- CVRP Capacitated Vehicle Routing Problem — the standard textbook version of the routing problem, in which what a vehicle can carry is a single number that the load on a route must not exceed.
- e-HGV Electric heavy goods vehicle — a battery-electric truck above 3.5 tonnes, doing the same distribution and haulage work as a diesel HGV but constrained by battery range and charging.
- Hyper-heuristic A method that chooses between other methods. Rather than settling on one way of building routes, it decides which approach to use, and when, based on what has been working.
- Moveable bulkhead A repositionable partition inside a temperature-controlled trailer that divides it into compartments, letting the split between frozen, chilled, and ambient be reconfigured trip to trip.
- Multi-compartment A vehicle whose load space is divided into separate compartments — bulk-tanker pots for different liquids, or temperature-controlled sections — each carrying a distinct product.
- PLF Piecewise Linear Function — how Optrak stores the way a stretch of road speeds up and slows down through the day, so it can work out the journey time for a vehicle leaving at any moment.
- TMS Transport Management System — software for managing freight operations end to end: order capture, planning, execution, fleet or carrier management, tracking, and freight settlement.
- Tractor-trailer An articulated vehicle made of a powered tractor unit coupled to a separate load-carrying trailer, the two being independently assignable resources.
- VRP Vehicle Routing Problem — the name for the job of deciding which vehicle makes which deliveries, and in what order. It is the question all routing software sets out to answer.
- VRPTW Vehicle Routing Problem with Time Windows — the routing problem with the added rule that each customer will only accept a delivery between certain times.
